November 16, 2018An Open Letter For My Daughter On the 3rd Birthday I’ve Spent ‘With’ Her
January 30, 2019I have a smartphone for work and a personal one as well. Both lines/phones are with Verizon, and both have the Asurion Insurance on the phones. Over the years, I’ve had to make 3 claims for my phones, and have facilitated the claims that my boss needed to make on his phone. Every claim has gone better than expected, and each time I use the insurance claim service, it gets better.
My work Verizon smartphone had been overheating, and now various functions no longer work. It will only power on while plugged in. It always claims there is no data signal, even when other Verizon phones in the same room get a perfect signal. Callers say they can barely understand me on the phone now. I tried to make a claim last night on the Asurion Insurance site, and it directed me to call Verizon. I waited until today, fearing an ordeal.
The Verizon agent I spoke with immediately explained that the insurance extends the warranty on your phone, so if it is a software or hardware issue, Verizon replaces the phone under the warranty instead. With the warranty replacement, there is no deductible. If the insurance replaced it, they would charge a $200 deductible for my phone model.
Next, the agent told me that they didn’t have any more of my phone model (Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge 128 GB) and would need to upgrade me to the next model up, a Samsung Galaxy S7 instead. I pointed out that I’d paid for the 128 GB size previously and asked how much storage the S7 had. He confirmed that they only had it in 32 GB size, which I explained would not work for me. Even with a storage card and moving all apps possible to the storage card, I run out of space quickly with just 32 GB. He then checked and said that they had the Samsung Galaxy S8 in the 64 GB capacity. I offered to settle for that capacity rather than the 128 GB I’d had previously. He got approval for this deal and set it up, telling me the new phone should arrive by Wednesday – day after tomorrow. Oh, and this is a NEW phone, not a refurbished model.
For my personal account, Verizon charges $13 per month for Total Mobile Protection for each line that we want insurance on. For that, we received the following benefits:
- As soon as next-day device replacement for loss, theft, damage, & post-warranty defects
- Expanded cracked screen repair options – cracked screen repair available for select devices – and they can come to you to repair the phone
- Unlimited access to Tech Coach experts
- Extended warranty for some devices
When I’ve looked up my phones, the deductible for replacing the entire phone was usually $200 and the deductible for cracked screen repair was $30. These deductibles vary depending on the phone you have. Every time I’ve needed to make a claim, they’ve sent a replacement phone the next day. Considering the original price of the phones, and what it would cost to buy a new phone, these deductibles are much easier for me than buying a new phone when one is broken or lost.
I highly recommend Verizon’s Total Mobile Protection. For me, the benefits and service I’ve received from Verizon and Asurion have been well worth the fees I pay for the insurance.
